We are constantly bombarded by information. Between social media feeds, office gossip, and the 24-hour news cycle, there is a relentless demand for our attention and our emotional energy. Often, we find ourselves exhausted at the end of the day because we have spent our cognitive battery reacting to things that do not actually matter to our immediate lives.
To protect our minds from this ongoing onslaught of information, we have to create a shield. One of the most effective ways to do this is by borrowing a brilliant, ancient technique from the Greek philosopher Socrates, often called the “Triple Filter.”
When someone brings you gossip, a frustrating headline, or a piece of outrage-inducing news, put the information through these three simple questions before you allow yourself to form an opinion on it:
1. Is it True?
Do you know for an absolute fact that this piece of information is accurate? In our fast-paced digital world, rumors and sensationalized headlines spread like wildfire. If you cannot verify that the information is completely true, it does not deserve your mental real estate.
2. Is it Good?
Is what you are about to hear or read something positive? We have a biological tendency to focus on the negative, which triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol. If the information is not good, you must ask yourself if you truly need to expose your nervous system to it.
3. Is it Useful?
Does this information actually impact your life? Will knowing this help you make a better decision, improve your health, or care for your loved ones? If it is not useful to your immediate reality, it is simply noise.
The Power of Walking Away
If a piece of information is neither true, nor good, nor useful, refuse to hear it. Stop the noise before it forces you to form an opinion.
We do not owe the world our outrage, and we certainly do not need to carry the weight of a thousand unnecessary opinions. By applying the Socrates Triple Filter, you aggressively protect your peace and reclaim your energy for the things that truly matter: your health, your passions, and the people right in front of you.
